Hay can last for about a year if you store it properly. 

In cool, dry place
Out of sun light.
Off damp floor

Here are some good ways to store it:

• Plastic storing bins with holes (you can drill holes)
• Big cardboard boxes with small holes (you can poke holes with a box cutter)   -I do it this way

If hay is kept in a plastic bag , which most of the  brands do, the hay won't last as long.
If the hay smells off or mouldy, it has gone bad :(
